BEYOND TALKING
︎︎︎ Hand-Bound Book
︎︎︎ Print Techniques: Exposed Open Spine Binding & Embossing
Overview:
A 92 page hand-bound book and handmade cover.
Growing up in a area where mental health is seen as a taboo subject and was rarely spoken about, I wanted to create a piece of work that sheds light onto the benefits we can gain through therapeutic techniques, more specifically art therapy.
This book consists of two interviews, one with an art therapist and the other with an art therapy patient where they speak about their thoughts and first-hand experiences.
The interviews were conducted to give us a better understanding of what goes on during a session, how patients and their work are interpreted, and first-hand benefits through the perspective of both.

I first spoke to Clare Brewer, an professional art therapist. She shares insight on how she communicates with clients, tackles the misconceptions about art therapy, and how art allows our unconscious to become conscious.
Then to a former patient. She speaks about when and why she started therapy, the difference between talk therapy and art therapy, and the direct positive shift that has prompted her recovery.
In addition, throughout the interviews, I put together a collection of supporting quotes from artists, psychologists and scientists laid out in the form of expressive typography, adding a small part of my visual practice.
Beyond Talking gives you a better understanding of art therapy, discussing all your unanswered questions.
